Face Lift Aesthetics

A facelift or rhytidectomy is a cosmetic surgical procedure performed to create a more youthful appearance on your face. The procedure can reduce sagging folds of skin on the cheeks and jawline and gravitational changes in the shape of your face with age.

During a facelift, the skin on each side of the face is pulled up from the underlying fascia and the tissues beneath the skin are surgically altered to return the contour of the face to a more youthful shape. Excess skin is removed before the flap is closed.

Neck lift (platysmaplasty) is often done in conjunction with a facelift to reduce fat deposits and sagging skin in the neck.

A facelift does not reduce fine wrinkles or wrinkles on your skin or damage from sun exposure, especially above the lips. Other cosmetic procedures may address the appearance or quality of the skin, such as mesotherapy.

During Surgery

Face lift surgery is usually performed in a hospital. Sometimes the procedure is performed under sedation and local anesthesia, which numbs only part of your body. In other cases, general anesthesia, which renders you unconscious, is recommended. Generally, a facelift involves lifting the skin and tightening the underlying tissues and muscles. Fat on the face and neck can be contoured, removed or redistributed. The facial skin is then re-draped over the repositioned contours of the face, excess skin is removed, and the wound is stitched or closed with tape. The incisions for the procedure depend on the techniques to be used and the patient’s preferences. Options include:
A traditional facelift incision begins at your temples at your hairline, continues in front of and around your ears, and ends behind your ears on your lower scalp. An incision may be made under your chin to improve the appearance of your neck.
A limited incision is a shorter incision that starts at your hairline just above your ear and wraps around the front of your ear but does not extend to the lower scalp.
The neck lift incision starts in front of your earlobe and continues around your ear to your lower scalp. A small incision is also made under your chin.
A facelift usually takes two to four hours, but may take longer if other cosmetic procedures are performed at the same time.

After Surgery

Your incisions will be covered with bandages that provide gentle pressure to minimize swelling and bruising. A small tube may be placed under the skin behind one or both of your ears to drain excess blood or fluid.
In the first few days after surgery:
Rest with your head high
Take pain medication as recommended by your doctor
Apply cold packs to the face to relieve pain and reduce swelling
